Fellowship categories

In 2009, the HWK established additional Fellowship categories for natural and social scientists in addition to the known “classics” in the four research areas Marine and Climate Research, Neurosciences and Cognitive Sciences, Social Sciences, and Energy Research (Material Science till September 2009). This intendeds to inspire not only senior scientists but also promising young researchers to use the HWK as a platform for network building and to take advantage of the manifold collaboration possibilities in the region.

An overview of the Fellowship categories:

  1. “Classical” Fellowship with a duration of three to ten months; the stay can also be split. Requirements: Completed doctoral degree; the planned project must fit within one of the HWK’s research fields. A collaboration with colleagues at the regional universities and research institutes is desirable.
  2. Junior Fellowship with a stay of up to 12 months. Requirements: a doctoral degree earned within the last five years; otherwise, the conditions are the same as for the classical Fellowship.
  3. Twin Fellowship with a stay length of two to eight weeks. Requirement: a Fellow with a HWK Fellowship of category 1 or 2 proposes a colleague for an intensive collaboration as a HWK Fellow.
  4. Associated Junior Fellowship with a duration of one to two semesters for scientists from the region. Requirements: through intensive collaboration, projects are completed on site together with other HWK Fellows.
  5. Artist in Residence and Fellowship “Guest of the Rector” (also outside the four research areas of the HWK) with a stay duration of up to ten months. Requirements: an invitation from the Rector of the HWK to work on a concrete artistic, journalistic or scientific project.

For the Fellowship categories 1 and 2, there are application deadlines (see under “How to become a Fellow?”)
