Statement of Problem

A more efficient use of wind energy systems depends on the availability of appropriate design tools: experimental and computational techniques that enable accurate and feasible evaluations of a variety of wind energy scenarios under realistic conditions. However, existing experimental and computational techniques do not meet such expectations. There is a significant discrepancy between the relative simplicity of turbulent flow considered in experimental/computational studies and the complexity of turbulent flow seen nature and in wind energy systems. In addition, demonstration of the capability to provide valid flow predictions requires an appropriate agreement between experimental and computational flow studies. In this regard, there is a significant deficiency: (inaccurate, incomprehensive) experimental studies of relevant flows have been performed 30 years ago, whereas computational studies of these flows using the most promising simulation methods do not exist so far.

The basic goal of the Turbulence Benchmarking Focus Group is to make a major step towards a much higher impact of experimental/computational tools on the design of optimal wind energy systems. The issues described above will be addressed by systematic joint experimental/computational studies of flows covering a significant range of turbulence intensities and complexity. Essential components of focus group activities are the initially planned joint projects taking place at the University of Oldenburg and the TU Munich, first turbulence studies involving the new Oldenburg wind tunnel, and the incorporation of novel numerical simulation methods (the first methods that enable feasible and accurate turbulence simulations with controlled physics).
