The Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg promotes excellent science through fellowships for exceptional international scientists, artists and authors from all fields of research or work.
The fellowships of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg offer outstanding scientists the opportunity to focus on research without the distractions of everyday academic life, to exchange ideas with colleagues from other disciplines, and to benefit from a diverse and vibrant fellowship community.
Through its fellowship program, the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg promotes scholarship and research in the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences, benefiting not only the individual fellow but also the scientific community at regional research institutions. Funding for individual scientists is distributed among a number of fellowship opportunities of varying types and durations.
The core fellowship formats of regular and junior fellowships are currently offered in the four research areas of the HWK: BRAIN & MIND, EARTH, TECHNOLOGY & SCIENCE, SOCIETY, and the ARTS & LITERATURE area. Both types are awarded based on a specific application process. They are complemented by additional fellowship offers to which special rules apply. Details can be found here.
Regular Fellowship
Appointment based on formal application procedure. Duration: 3-10 months. Splitting into no more than two periods of residence is possible. Requirements: completed doctoral degree (more than 5 years ago). Planned project must fit one of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg’s research fields. Collaboration with colleagues at regional universities and research institutes are appreciated, but not mandatory for an application. The fellowship is a funded scholarship.
Junior Fellowship
Appointment based on formal application procedure. Duration: 3-10 months. Requirements: doctoral degree earned within the last five years. With regard to other regulations, conditions are the same as for regular fellowships. The fellowship is a funded scholarship.
Twin Fellowships
Twin fellows must be nominated by a current regular or junior fellow. A direct application is not possible. The duration of the stay of the second fellow is from two to eight weeks with the goal of increasing collaboration for the benefit of the fellowship project.
Associate Fellowship
No regular application procedure. Available only to regional scientists working on selected projects.
Associate Junior Fellowship (Postdoc Program)
Associate junior fellows form part of the Postdoc Program. The program is only available to regional junior scientists of all disciplines. Fellows continue their own research at their respective institutions, but meet for various events at Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg. The program also provides funding opportunities, e.g. for conferences and workshop. Duration: up to three years.
Artist in Residence
Annual international call for applications. Suitable candidates are recommended for funding by the Artistic Advisory Board and selected by the Rector of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg. Fellowships usually and depending on the artistic project applied for have a duration of up to 4 months. The fellowship includes a financial stipend. Otherwise, the provisions for regular fellowships apply.
Writer in Residence
On invitation by the rector of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg only. Variable duration.
Postdoc-Programm
The Postdoc Program was created at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg to promote young scientists. It supports talented young scientists in expanding their own careers by sponsoring their own event and offering them the opportunity to participate in events at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg.
Members of the program are associate junior fellows (see above). Membership in the program is limited to three years and participants remain employed at their regional home institution. Applications are accepted in response to an annual call for applications with an application deadline of the end of February.
